How to enable and disable FaceTime on iPhone and iPad

How to enable and disable FaceTime on iPhone and iPad

While FaceTime is a great feature that can make conversations with loved ones and friends much more personal and interactive, there are times when it may not be appropriate or you don't want to be bothered with video calls. Whether you just have an aversion to video chatting and don't care much for it or you just need to disable it for a period of time, you can easily do so in just a few taps.

Here's how.

  1. Launch the Settings app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on FaceTime.
  3. At the very top you'll see an option to turn FaceTime on and off. Tap the slider to turn it to the Off position.
  4. FaceTime will now be disabled and you won't receive any video calls on that specific device.

If you ever want to re-enable FaceTime, you can just pop back into settings and turn it on again.

Skype update brings back 'classic' UI option for tablets

Skype Interface

Skype has just been updated to give users the option of selecting a "classic" UI instead of the new and improved tablet interface. The previous update to Skype added many new features and a more tablet-optimized interface overall, including a portrait UI for calling -- the curious part was the rest of the app was still locked in landscape mode. Skype is now backpedaling, sort of, by letting tablet users go back to a phone-style UI in the settings if they prefer. The new option is probably a better choice if you're on a smaller screen like the Nexus 7 that is often used in portrait.

10-inch tablet users are still better off with the new "tablet" UI because the larger devices are quite comical in portrait mode. Until Skype figures out how to do a responsive tablet UI that changes appropriately for landscape and portrait use, it's good to have this option. You can grab the update from the Play Store link at the top of this post.

Best app to track bills and expenses from your iPhone

Best app to track bills and expenses from your iPhone

Pageonce provides not only an iPhone app to help keep you on track with bills but a whole suite of tools online as well as well as an iPad app. From linking bank accounts and credit cards to inputting bills and expenses, Pageonce is easy to use and understand. If you've got investments, it can also help you keep track of those as well.

Whether you're trying to save money or just want to know where you stand at any given point in time, Pageonce offers something for everyone.

To get started with Pageonce, you'll be asked to add any bank accounts and credit cards you'd like to track. You can then add bills and expenses to see what your monthly bills are and when they're due. You can add bills and expenses either automatically from a list of supported merchants or you can manually add them and set them up to recur regularly. The list of support merchants isn't huge but adding bills manually is pretty painless as well. Popular merchants such as cable providers, wireless carriers, and utility companies are supported and you should be able to import your bills automatically. Pageonce will then update them when they're paid and when a new bill is due.

The main menu of Pageonce is where you'll go to view how much cash you have on hand in your collective accounts, pay bills, view and manage investments, and information on credit card debt. Pageonce also bundles in offers that you can apply for and they consistently change. You can also sign up for Credit Guard and monitor your credit score directly within Pageonce without the need for a separate app or service. Add-on features aren't free and Credit Guard will automatically bill you $6.99 for the feature if you opt-in for it. Pageonce also gives you access to graphs and charts that show you what kind of things you're spending your money on. This makes for an easy way to adjust spending habits or to plan for paying down certain debts that are causing you problems.

If you prefer to pay and manage bills from your computer, Pageonce also has a robust website that you can log in to and view all the data you've entered from any computer or device. Once you've paid your bills and updated your accounts, the data will sync across any device you've got Pageonce installed on including iPhone and iPad.

When it comes to tracking expenses and monitoring your cash flow, Pageonce offers a lot of information at a quick glance while making more in-depth information available at the same time. The ability to pay virtually any expense or individual from your bank account directly within the app also sets is apart from other plain ledger and bill tracking apps. If your bank doesn't offer person to person pay services natively, Pageonce can fill that gap. Even if your bank does offer bill pay services natively, being able to track expenses, income, make payments, and monitor cash flow all in once place allows you to have a much tighter hold on your finances and that's where Pageonce really beats the competition.

Sony Debuts PS4 With More Whimper Than Bang

Sony officially introduced its long-anticipated PlayStation 4 video game console at a media event in New York City on Wednesday. However, it merely showed off its new controller -- it didn't actually unveil the physical console, likely saving that newsworthy moment for the upcoming E3 in Los Angeles in June. Sony did give quite a bit more than a peak at the upcoming system's hardware, though, and noted that the PS4 will be centered on a custom chip that will contain eight x86-64 cores, along with a what it described as a "state of the art graphics processor."

Google Chrome now uses SPDY HTTP replacement, halves page load time

SPDY in Google Chrome
We're not entirely sure of the time line here, but it looks like Google has now rolled out the SPDY HTTP replacement to its full bevy of Web services, including Gmail, Docs, and YouTube. If you're currently using Google's Chrome browser you're probably already using SPDY.

We originally reported on SPDY way back in November 2009, when Google introduced it as yet another experiment in making the Web faster, like Go, Native Client and speculative pre-connections. Over the last 18 months, though, SPDY support has found its way into the stable build of Chrome.

SPDY is basically a streamlined and more efficient version of HTTP. At its most basic, SPDY introduces parallel, multiplexed streams over a single TCP connection -- but at the same time, SPDY allows for prioritization, so that vital content (HTML) can be sent before periphery content (JavaScript, video). All in all, the SPDY protocol can halve page load times, which is obviously rather significant.

The best bit, though, is that SPDY is an open-source project. HTTP 1.1 is a lumbering beast that needs to be replaced before low-latency real-time computing really becomes a reality, and SPDY is one of the best options currently on the table. To be honest, we're not sure why SPDY hasn't received more coverage -- it's awesome in every way. At the moment, though, the only way to help speed up SPDY's proliferation, is with an experimental Apache mod.

As far as actually 'trying it out,' your best bet is downloading Chrome, hitting up some Google sites, and then checking chrome://net-internals to see your active SPDY sessions. SPDY is a transparent replacement for HTTP, though, and as such it's rather hard to see its effects. Google's sites definitely feel fast in Chrome, but there are more technologies than just SPDY at work.

China Defense Ministry Blasts Mandiant Hacking Report

China's defense ministry staged a news conference Wednesday to deny and decry a report that the People's Liberation Army was engaged in cyberwarfare against U.S. corporations, organizations and government agencies. The denial specifically addressed the bombshell Mandiant hacking study, which declared that the PLA's Unit 61398, located near Shanghai, was one of the world's "most aggressive computer hacking operations." China itself had been the victim of cyberattacks, said a ministry official, and Mandiant mischaracterized China's activities.
